City Nostalgia for All

I remember when a venture east in Austin strictly meant going to visit my Abuela or handful of other family members that reside in East Austin. Ninety percent Latinos and ten percent lower-class Austin. You could even call East austin the 'Little Mexico' of the Austin at the time. Pawn shops, Mexican bakerys, cantinas and other Spanish-speaking businesses. Now fast forward ten years: East Astin is like a Little Brooklyn. The young and hip are riding their road bikes, zipping up their hoodies and venturing east because it's close to downtown, and thriving. Though there is a certain charm to it, the restaurants and dive bars do make it a unique and fun place to be after dark, I'm afraid it's a bit too hipster-ville for my taste.
It's merely amusing to see these two demographic classes clash as the city outgrows itself. Poor, older, local mexicans, and young, non-local, twenties, well-to-do students and hipster kids.

So what's going to happen as development in East Austin continues, will it keep it's old-city hispanic vibe, or completely transform into a new area for Austin's young and trendy? In my opinion, it will have to be a part of the city that shares it's cultures and comes to an agreement on space.

I miss you, twenty fresh. Though seriously...my lack of writing the past few months has been painful. Let's just say life has consumed me? Returning from Spain has been a whirlwin of confusion for little ol me, getting used to the non-stop American lifestyle again, trying to incorporate my newfound necessity for pleasure on the daily, finding a new job, remembering I'm still in college, etc. But I'm tracking my balance backdown (thanks Leo Babuta- as always)!

Anywho, my inspirations as of late...

The Black Keys:

All the rage to me currently. Dan Auerbach's voice makes me feel like everything is right in the world. Missing them at Austin City Limits this year unfortunately, but let's hope I can talk a scalper into an afforadable price so I can satisfy my urge to hear TIGHTEN UP live at Stubbs in a few weeks. Swooooon.

Foodie-Business:
I know, Austin has been exploding with Foodie's since the opening of Whole Foods back in the day, but I'm totally digging the competition right now. For those not familiar with the winning Austin restaurant scene, right now seems an appropriate time as it is Austin Restaurant Week. ARW benefits the sustainable food center, and has over 60 restaurants participating. My favorite menu's on the list- Annie's Cafe & Bar, Buenos Aires Cafe, Cippolina West, and Jeffrey's. Check out their menu's ranging from $15-35 per person.

FALL TIME:
Happy First Day of Fall! I think I see a 59 degrees in the forecast this week! What will you be for halloween...? For me, so far I'm leaning towards Elle Driver from Kill BIll. (Or Luz from MACHETE?!) Come on, I just want to wear an eye patch.

Art-Therapy:
Apparently I'm graduating this Spring, and apparently I'm an official therapy Intern. Austin Art-Therapy folks. It's nice to learn from a pro. Deanna Miesch Is a really great woman, not to meantion her awesome studio on the east side will be participating in the East Austin Studio Tour this November. Can't wait.

Yoga:
Just can't sign away without giving my teachers over at Black Swan Yoga some love. Seriously has been a big help in my life since returning this summer...affordable amazing classes, all donation based.. See you at Sunset Sweaty Yoga sometime this week?

My stay in the magical Gaudi-land has passed by, and I've made it back to the States all in one piece. This seems to amaze everyone I've seen thus far since I've been back in the states...and myself.

Being back home is bittersweet. Photos coming of the World Cup, Mont Tibidabo, Mont Juic, the beauty of Gaudi, and Barcelona nightlife...just ya wait.

El verano is well underway and somehow I've woken up across the atlantic in Barcelona. My first few days here have been heaven. Aside from the times when I'm forced to be with two dozen other American international students in public places here, I really love the good friends I've made, and the places I've been so far.

Everything, including the people, is so much more full of life in Spain in comparison to America. People rest, are productive without being in a hurry 24/7, save plenty of room for pleasure, all seem to be in love, and take care of themselves here...it's a very balanced lifestyle.

I´ve seen lots of beautiful things already, and met people from VERY diverse walks of life, pictures when I return to my apartment (I´m at a hostel in Valencia right now).

I'm flying to Barcelona in less than two weeks. The anxiety/happiness/fear/excitement is building rapidly! A friend of mine that I've gotten close with the past few months has decided to come with. Though I'm still traveling alone, I'm happy knowing I'll have a travel partner once I get to BCN.

We made plans see France and Stiges. It was sort of a spontaneous decision and though there was lots of thought behind it, it's still crazy! I couldn't say no...can't resist the flow of life, a mantra I believe powerfully in for the time being.

Countdown..13 days. Adeu America!

My Two cents on Bliss...

This summer, Julia Roberts is going to be in a film based off Elizabeth Gilbert’s essential and spiritually wonderful novel Eat, Pray, Love. The mainstream West (now including Hollywood!) is finally being warmed up to Eastern ideas of spirituality and religion. It’s a revolution I’d say.

To go hand in hand with this so-I-call-it ‘spiritual revolution’ is another revolution, in the world of psychology. The last decade much of research has dedicated it’s energies to the psychology of happiness. How to attain it, keep it, share it, even what our brains look like when we have it. I know, what a wonderful aspect of life to make empirical, but it’s beneficial to the progress of society as a whole in my opinion.

At the heart of this psychology of happiness is the idea of balance, or internal equilibrium. Religions of the east encourage finding this balance, and that is there that you will find your eternal bliss, amongst life’s chaos.

GIlbert puts this perspective into her book perfectly, comparing the western and eastern tradition of how the injustices of the world are viewed and dealt with in the eye of religion,

“The [other] objective of religion, of course, is to try to make sense of our chaotic world and explain the inexplicabilities we see playing out here on earth everyday… The Western tradition says, “It’ll all get sorted out after death, in heaven and hell.” Over in the East, though, the Upanishads shrug away any attempt to make sense of the world’s chaos. Furthermore, the Upanishads suggest that so-called chaos may have an actual divine function, even if you can’t personally recognize it now: “The Gods are fond of the cryptic and dislike the evident.” The best we can do then, in response to our incomprehensible and dangerous world, is to practice holding equilibrium internally— no matter what insanity is transpiring out there.”

I believe finding this equilbirium is the most basic function of spirituality, necessary for all other aspects. I also believe that balance is the power of sucess in life. I dedicate these writings to the continuous lesson on balance and the bliss that can be found there!

I'm going abroad for the first time in my life in a few months, completely alone. I hope I don't get mugged, among other things, but words can't explain how excited I am to soak in a different culture and gain perspective.

On a different note, I'd like to complain about the fact that I don't like when art work accompanies words, especially poetry. The words should speak and paint a picture for themselves. Images on post-secret are fun to browse, however.

To give a few words their glory, this is a poem by Carrie Fountain I really enjoy. It's slightly morbid, honest and I love it.

We found a duck, a mallard, dead
on the shore, head split, eyes loose,

yet when someone poked it with a stick
it shuddered suddenly

and stood up, then collapsed again
and died for real, which to me

Pop-up Shop: JNBY

Yet another reason why the big apple calls my name every winter: Pop-up Shops.

Whether it's Topshop, Rordarte or Asian designed brands brought to the US, I completely love the idea. This season China-based brand JNBY is setting up shop in NYC's Soho district before it permanently finds a home in the city. I suppose you could think of pop-up shops as the airstream trailer of restaurants. Still delicious, but more unique because it's produced on a smaller scale. This season JNBY's pop-up shop is holiday inspired with jackets, hoodies, socks, leggings and dresses in loud prints.

How to Be Mindful During the Holidays

Yes, The Holidays are full of merry and cheer but they can also be a really stressful time for everyone with get-togethers, holiday shopping, work and all kinds of other stresses and worries. Thankfully, our good friend and guru Leo Babauta of Zen Habits has turned being mindful during the Holidays into three easy steps:

1. A Simple Practice- Take an action, like eating a fruit, and do it mindfully. Savor it slowly, take in the tastes and smells. Think about the way that eating it makes you feel, and concentrate on that feeling.

2. A Simple Mantra- Each time you feel yourself getting stressed or overwhelmed, remember the fruit. Say to yourself "apple" or "banana" or whatever fruit you ate and remember what it was like to be mindful as you ate that fruit. Now do the same thing with whatever situation you are shopping, spending time with loved ones, or doing a work task. Focus on that one thing and really be in the moment with that thing or person.

3. Remember What's Important - During the stressful Holiday's remember what's most important to you. That might be your loved ones, friends, spouse, kids, significant other, or even work. Whatever that is, be passionate about it and and focus on it throughout the holidays. The rest is just noise. It's not important. Fully experience what's important to you and let the rest fade away.

What Women in London are Wearing to the Disco: Lingerie

Fact: Women in London are wearing lingerie to the Disco.

Women will always look for new ways to wear less clothing, and no one will stand in their way. After the lingerie trend on the spring 2010 runways, the trend was bound to hit the streets also. I'm not talking corset tops, women are making conscious decisions to shop in the lingerie section for clothes to go out in. According to WWD UK Department store Selfridges has sold 70% more corsets this winter than it did last year already. The four-figure priced corsets have been selling out in less than 24 hours a piece and when Rihanna performed in her toilet-paper-esque slip costume at the American Music Awards, sales of the likewise Selfridges slip skyrocketed.

So, when shall the trend hit us here in the United States? Hopefully later than sooner, but my vote goes to Lady Gaga when guessing who will be the first to sport the new trend out.

Portland's Foodcart Scene: An image of What Austin's to Become?

Austin isn't the only city in America trending the non-fastfood, non- restaurant convenience food service. Portland, Oregon is far ahead of the game, apparently. With over 400 of what they call foodcarts, serving hundreds of different ethnic foods to city-goers curbside, the city is a model of what Austin may looking like in the future, based on the recent air-stream trailer trend.

The benefits are similar, little fees for space, good profit. But are these "foodcarts" as hip as air-stream trailers? Doubtful, Portland.

"Your Own fat, Relocated"

The latest kind of recycling has nothing to do with soda bottles, according to a recent New York Times article. Instead, it concerns your body fat. Wherever it may be thighs, butt, tummy, surgeons are now liposuctioning it and injecting into breasts for clients who wish to enlarge their breasts without going the silicone route.

The procedure isn't new. Infact, in the early nineties it was completely condemned but currently is generating a new wave of excitement. Recently the Plastic Surgery Society announced that this procedure "can be considered a safe method of augmentation" and doctors have discussed the fact that the only way to create a natural-looking breast is to use your own body's tissue.

Of course their are risks involved. Such as the fact that injected fat can cause mammograms to be offset and misread. Also, the likelihood fat will survive being suctioned out, and transplanted is sometimes low. However, as the procedure becomes more popular, surgeons are becoming more advanced in their techniques.

My opinion- silicone or not, it's still unnatural. However, I do recognize that everybody's insecurities are different and maybe women like the idea of not having to put something foreign into their breasts to make them larger. Even if it is say FAT.

Breakfast Recipe: Couscous with Oranges and Dates

Now that my semester is virtually over, I have the time to actually take care of my body again, actually feed it the right things and exercise more. Sitting top on my healthy-habits-to-return-to list: eating a healthy breakfast.

A breakfast recipe I am trying this week: Couscous with oranges and dates! Mmmm.

Ingredients

1 1/2 cups of water
2 to 3 tablespoons of brown sugar or honey
1 teaspoon of orange flower water (optional; find at Middle Eastern markets)
3 tablespoons of chopped dried apricots
2 tablespoons currants or raisins
1 tablespoon unsalted butter (optional)
1 cup couscous
1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon
2 navel oranges
6 dates, pitted and cut in quarters
pomegranate seeds (for garnish!)

1. Combine water and brown sugar and honey in a saucepan and boil. Turn heat to medium and continue to boil until the sugar has dissolved. Still in the orange flower water, apricots, raisins or currants and set aside for 5 minutes.

2. Place couscous in 2-quart bowl, and add the cinnimon and salt. Stir. Pour on the hot syrup and mix together. Set aside for twenty minutes (if not eating right away-refrigerate).

3. Shortly before serving, strain the couscous and stir in the butter and then cover again.

4. Peel oranges over couscous (so any juice drips into it) and add the four slices atop with couscous along with date slices and pomegranate seeds, if desired, and serve.

The New York Times magazine released it's 9th annual Year in Ideas issue recently, a 2009 recap worth spending a few minutes reading. My favorite idea categories for the issue: culture, social science, and design among other more dry categories like politics.

Some of my favorite "top-notch" ideas of 2009:

Stilletto Claws- 12 inch tall stiletto boots. Representing the "surrealist clothing" trend that hit runways and streets this year. Designer Alexander McQueen puts the gaudy fashion into perspective perfectly, "I don't think it makes sense to play safe in these times" "The world needs fantasy, not reality. We have enough reality today".

Kickstarter- a website that functions as an incredible tool for emerging artists. Think of it as a consultation with fans, the artists asking them the question, 'Would you pay for me to make this art?' Essentially artists propose an idea on the site, how much money they would need to complete such a project, and people pledge money until the amount requested is reached. If a monetary goal isn't reach, no one spends a penny. More than 1,000 projects are being raised for already ranging from, a diverse solo trip around the world ($8,124 raised) to a book by Scott Thomas documenting how he developed the graphic design behind Obama's campaign ($84,614) Not too shabby for the internet I'd say.

P.T.S.D. Treatment: Tetris- Simplicity is the cure to our most complex of problems sometimes. Consider the fact that recent studies have proved that playing Tetris can significantly reduce the negative effects of P.T.S.D., like amount of visual flashbacks, for those who are suffering. Scientists award the effectiveness of the game's therapy to color vibrancy and it's ability to stimulate the visual cortex of the brain, leaving the rest of it to process the traumatic memories that sometimes resurface. "It was so simple, and it worked so beautifully" said Emily Holmes, who experimented with Tetris' therapeutic aspects. When in need of a P.T.S.D. vaccine next time allow your cognitive abilities to take over: manipulate gently falling bricks.

Aesop Rock: Rescheduled Show @ The Mohawk

Yes, ACL and SXSW host acceptable live music weather, but there's nothing better than seeing your favorite music in crisp, cool weather. No need to worry about sweaty bodies, sunburns, or that drunk person beside you passing out via dehydration.
That being said, let me tell you what show I'm most excited to catch this winter: Aesop Rock. After one winter-weather cancellation, Aesop will be gracing us with his presence Saturday Jan. 23rd at The Mohawk.

Incase T-pain and Chris Brown have you forgetting what real talented rapping is, Aesop Rock will whip your tastes back into shape. The 33 year old Long Island, New York native made it big at the start of the Underground wave of rap in the early nineties and in 2008 was deemed one of the most influential artists of the decade by betterpropaganda. No telling wether it's his clever lyrics or well-developed beats that has given him such praise, but the rapper sure can rhyme.

I know, enough about the fashion blogging. But consider this 13 year old who's fashion blogging skills got her dibs on free clothes by the infamous Rodarte sisters. They gave her clothes not from their upcoming target line, but clothes from their main line, which prices for range around the four figure range. Not bad for the 7th grade, eh? Tavi Givenson's blog Style Rookie, which is full of collaging, videos and her unique fashion inspirations, has practically gained her fame and given her press ranging from the New York Times to Teen Vogue.

Watch the video she was asked to make for the Rodarte sister's about their upcoming fashion line for target!

The Rodarte sister's say they chose Tavi to make the video because "she's a mix between J.D. Salinger, Dorothy Parker, and Cindy Sherman. Our perfect combination!"
Obviously there's something unique about Tavi's 13 years on Earth that have gained her this success. What it is, I'm not quite sure. However, I'm sure we're to hear more about her and her fashion-aimed endeavors in the future.

Senate Consideration: Tanning Bed Tax

Alas, Senate Democrats have aimed their discussions towards another one of America's unhealthy habits. Already, taxes for unnecessary cosmetic procedures such as Botox, have worked their way into the new health care plan. Now, Senate Democrats are discussing the possibility of taxes for those wishing to artificially bronzen (or orang-en?) their skin via tanning beds at salons and the purchase of sunlamps for at-home tanning use.

Sure, the Senate looks for healthcare revenue wherever it can, but this might actually prove to be successful since tanners-much like cigarette smokers are addicts. The research has been done and this dangerous habit has been proved equal to cigarette smoking, but is it worth precious tax money?

Furry friends: The New Botox

Women are always looking for new and innovative ways to avoid aging, that's a given. But what about an anti-aging source, that requires no injections, swallowing, or obsessive-compulsive application?

Call it a miracle, but I'll call this anti-aging secret an underrated human need: Owning a pet.

It's known psychologically, yes, that owning a pet will decrease levels of depression,stress, and loneliness by increasing laughter, nurturing, and exercise. But recently, according to Glamour, a study showed the physical benefits to owning a pet: those who own pets are likely to have less wrinkles on their face as compared to non-pet owners. This was the case especially when it came to wrinkles that usually appear around the eyes. A researcher from the University of California hypothesized that this is the case because our faces are more relaxed, and fa less tense when we are talking and interacting with animals.

Barbara Ann Kipfer: An Enlightened Writer

Gift shopping at BookPepople yesterday at I stopped in the self-help section and remembered how much I love Barbara Ann Kipfer's books. I gave her first book, 14,000 Things to Be Happy About to a friend as a gift, and recieved Self-Meditation a book with 3,299 mantras, tips, quotes and koans for peace and serentity in return a few years later. I love the book, and read from it almost daily.

Kipfer has a Phd in Buddhist Psychology among other subjects and writes from a wonderfully enlightened perspective. What's great about her books is that they are full valuable wisdom yet simple, sharp, and to the point, making them readable almost anywhere. If you haven't read any of her books, I suggest this be the season to purchase one for yourself, or for a friend since they make fabulous gifts.

If books aren't your gift of choice, I suggest you check out Kipfer's cleverly designed website, offering pockets full of wisdom and advice. Plus, Kipfer even has nifty igoogle gadgets for you to read about happiness, self-meditation, wisdom and more on a daily basis from your google homepage.

Michelle Obama: Even Impresses the French

The media will never leave a first-lady alone, especially a beautifully styled one like Michelle Obama. Two days from now, here in America, Lady Obama will appear on Barbara Walter's special as America's most fascinating woman. Abroad, things are looking just as gratifying. Recently, Lady O won the top spot on French Elle's annual best-dressed list, beating out Frances own first lady in the "political chic" category. Well deserving, of course. Elle cited Mrs. Obama's support of emerging designers and her signature "cinched cardigan" look as her winning attributes.

She's modern, but still classy. Even in the eyes of the French. Way to go, Lady O.

Zac Posen for Target: Spring 2010

Man, do we love Target lately. Thank goodness for the mass consumption of designer goodies. If you've never been interested in the retail store's collaboration with designers or their GO International series, I assure you it will be hard to resist peeping at this designer's work.

The infamous 29 year old American designer Zac Posen who has dressed stars like Naomi Campbell and Gwyntheth Paltrow, will be teaming with the store next spring to design for their GO International series. While specific pieces and prices aren't identifiable yet, the retail store does know that it will make sure to have Posen's designs available to shoppers both in store and online April 25 to May 30th. Perfect timing to sass up your spring wardrobes without breaking the bank, ladies. Can't wait.

In the meantime, look forward to Rodarte, designed by sisters Kate and Laura Mulleavy which will hit Target stores nationwide on December the 20th. When sourcing their inspiration for the line, the sisters credit their favorite films, Rosmary's Baby, Bonnie and Clyde, and Harold and Maude. Look for ward to lots of sequins, tule, and lacy tights in this sassy-dark humor themed line.

Texas School Outlaws "Skinny Pants"

Being from the liberal wonderland of Austin, it's sometimes easily forgotten how not so liberal the rest of our state is. Consider this Texas vs. Skinny Pants ridiculousness where a school doesn't allow a boy to wear his new "skinny pants" to middle school:

If those pants are "disruptive" that school district isn't preparing it's students for the real world's fashion crazies. Que triste! Poor students... I suggest Seth transfer to a school in Austin where he can fully express the range of his disruptive, obscene fashion choice.

Lily Allen to Quit Music and open Fashion Boutique

According to ELLE, adorable singer/songwriter Lily Allen has announced this week that she will be taking a two-year hiatus from her career as a music artist and try her hand in the fashion business. The star who has recently been the face of chanel, designed a collection for New Look and has launched a range of jewelry will open up a fashion boutique with her sister. As friends leave town to ring in the new year and old ones come to town to visit over the holidays it's essential that the place to ring in the new year is fully planned in advance. Live at Seaholm is at it again and RARE magazine plans to host the most amazing New Years Eve Bash at the fresh event venue. Entertainment is as follows: Flosstradamus, DJ Car Stereo Wars and SHIV, light shows, dancing, a cash bar for beer and cocktails and an LED video board countdown displaying downtown's fireworks. For those on a tight budget, this event may not be the most brilliant of ideas, but surely it will be worth the $75. The ticket preice includes hors d'oeuvres from fabulous Austin restaurants and champagne, of course.

It's predicted that the event will sell out quickly, so if you're going to be in Austin to ring in the new year, I suggest you buy a ticket quickly to assure a perfectly beautiful New Years Eve! Since I'll be in town, there's no way I'm missing out, this one's going to have to be put on the credit card...

Me and Orson Welles Premiere: The Paramount

This may be a little dated but still worth mentioning. Last Monday The Paramount premiered Me and Orson Welles to an eager audience. Actors Zac Efron, Christian McKay and director Richard Linklater were in attendance. Pre-movie and on the red carpet there was naturally a handful of young girls waiting for Efron's presence, however the amount of calm fans evened the scene out.

While Efron signed autographs and snapped photos with fans in his trendy black leather jacket and boots, McKay was busy working his charm. "I think I'm the only actor that was asked to lose weight to play Orson Welles!" "I put up a picture of Zac in front of me while I was on the treadmill." While McKay posed for pictures for the press, proudly sporting a 'hook em horns' hand the fans truly appreciated the quality actor's sincereity.

Equally as charming and interesting, was director Richard Linklater, who is from Austin. "When people say welcome back I say, I never left!" Linklater, who is the head of the Austin Film Society, spoke about his appreciation for the type of environment Austin offers to the film scene as a whole. "Austin has such a literate population."

The film played quickly after the short and sweet red carpet premeire, and it did not disappoint. McKay made acting as Orson Welles stubborn and powerful character look easy, while Efron broke hearts with his love for actress Claire Dane's character in the film. Overall, I'd say the film may be Oscar-worthy.

Excite your boring week of finals, or work, with Eat Local Week by Edible Austin! The event kicked off yesterday at the downtown Farmer's Market with a proclamation by the mayor and goes on until the 12th. Basically, all local restaurants and markets are participating to please your taste buds with special menus and locally-sourced entrees and products. Quel Festin!

The event is a fundraiser for Urban Roots, a youth development program which uses sustainable agriculture as a means of education for youth, and as a way of increasing available healthy food in Austin. Over 50 restaurants and markets are participating in the week long event, which will all donate their proceeds of a specific menu special or a portion of their sales to Urban Roots.

Here's a tease of what kind of locally sourced featured dishes you will find throughout the week. At Annie's Cafe and Bar: Grilled Wild Atlantic salmon with organic watermelon radishes and turnips from Boggy Creek Farm and organic romanesco from Harvest Time Farm, served in a light lemon beurre blanc sauce.

Kehinde Wiley: Equestrian Portrait of King Phillip II

Just when you thought the King of Pop's influence on our culture was starting to diminish... This year's Art Basel Miami Beach featured numerous pieces which were in tribute to the deceased king.

A favorite from the Art Basel...by none other that Kehinde Wiley himself. God I love this artist:

I know I've previously mentioned and reviewed Wiley's work, but he never ceases to impress me. His "Equestarian Portrait of King Phillip II" is very clever and fitting for the King of Pop, I believe. Allegedly Wiley began the work when Jackson was still alive, and it was a planned project that the two had discussed together after Jackson saw Wiley's work in the Brooklyn museum of art and commissioned him for a portrait. Naturally, Jackson often had himself painted as a King so the pop artist was a perfect match for Wiley's style of work. After a halt in the project, Wiley finished the piece after hearing of Jackson's death.

The swapping out of the Spanish monarch's face in the portrait seems as though it's done so effortlessly. In addition, the boldness of the portrait itself is one that would have made Jackson proud.

Empire State of Mind, Part II?

Yes, I have no shame in admitting I love Jay-Z and Alicia Keys' Empire State of Mind. Everyone else does too, apparently. You can't walk halfway down east 6th street without hearing the song blaring out of a bar or drive 5 minutes in the car without hearing it on the radio. Not to mention, the song peaked #1 in Billboard's Hot 100, a first for Jay-Z. I like, okay, I don't mind, Jay-Z's rapping about himself and the old Brooklyn hood, but I LOVE Alicia in it.

Ever wonder what the song would be like if she did it herself? Well, your curiosity can take a rest because Ms. Keys will have an "Empire State of Mind, Part II" on her latest album "The Element of Freedom" due to hit stores December 13th. In the version Keys talks about her own experience in the melting pot city, like working hard as a young lady, and taking gipsy cabs from Harlem to Brooklyn.

34-Year Austin Tradition: The Armadillo Christmas Bazaar

The Bazaar begins on Friday the 11th and goes on until Christmas Eve at The Austin Convention Center from 11 am to 11 pm daily. This year there will be over 40 Austin bands and hundreds of artists selling their variety of art, jewelry and photography.

Austin, Texas made CNN's top places to find "Christmas cheer" and they think that The Armadillo Christmas Bazaar helps make it so. I most definitely agree with this statement. If you've already done your Christmas shopping, The Bazaar is still a good place to catch a unique piece of art for your home, holiday- themed or not. My best advice: don't go looking for something in particular, instead see where the labrynth-like set up of booths of artists takes you.

Rihanna Goes "Hard" with Military Couture

As of 2009 Rihanna has overcome a painful relationship experience that was exploited by the media, been nominated for two grammys, made herself an icon in the fashion world, and released her fourth Album, Rated R which critics are already loving and predicting will largely help her career. Need I say, she has accomplished all of this while dressed like a perfectly groomed iconic bad-ass.

This style of Rihanna's is apparent in the video for her third single off of Rated R, "Hard", which she just shot. Rihanna calls the style, "couture military" as everything in the video is surrounded by the idea of something military. It's not certain if the military theme is recurring in her song lyrics, but she surely portrays her tough military like skin in the song, as well as in the other songs off the album which are all rawer, deeper and darker than before. The album is surely a portrayal of how Rihanna has grown as a woman in the past year, and how the dangers of passion will make you realize a lot about yourself. Not to mention, her vocal range is deserving of all the attention she has been receiving this fall.

According to New York Magazine's interview with Luz, before Madonna "man-napped" him he studied Buddhism, yoga, and Kabbalah, as he was looking for something to make him strong, comfortable and happy in life. Yes, let's all let the green-eyed monster in us roll it's eye in envy.

Year of the Cougar

Now that 2009 is preparing to wrap up, Newsweek has deemed it 'the year of the Cougar'. Apparently, Monday Nov. 30th has been deemed "Cyber Monday" the online continuation of Black Friday. A national survey predicted that a record 100 million American's would online-shop for the biggest internet bargains on Monday.

Last year, 85 million participated in the holiday click-shopping on Cyber-Monday. The internet seems to be pretty on-tap with it's consumerism game.

How to "want less" this Holiday Season

As we all embark on the season that's about giving, and secretly, WANTING, also...

It seems appropriate that we all get a lesson in overcoming the challenge of wanting to acquire all of the time. I found this article posted on Zen Habits, no less useful than the typical Zen Habits blog posting about how to lead a minimalist lifestyle.

Titled "How to Want Very Little" By guest blogger David Turnbull, he breaks down the challenge into 8 seemingly simple steps:

1. Have a vision for your life. Don't just have goals, be specific about them. Have depth, emotion, and passion behind them.
2. Find your motivation. Don't be a meaningless minimalist. Wether it's to save money, travel, or free up time find your motivation to want less and lead a more simple life.
3. Experience the benefits. Plan a short vacation with your extra money, dedicate a room in your house as a tranquil no-stuff zone, visit minimalist location. Actually reaping in the benefits of the wanting less, minimalist lifestyle is the best way to transform your mindset.
4. Be noncommittal. Wanting less and being a minimalist is about a lifestyle, not a decision. Remind yourself of this, and do not feel tied down to your choices.
5. Understand the psychology of influence. Don't fall into the trap of cheap psychological sales tricks any longer. Remember that Sales and marketing are apart of this world you must learn to work around.
6. Grow into it. As with any goals, start with small victories and be persistent by surrounding yourself with positive influences. Literature like Tao Teh Ching and similar mind-set individuals are a good idea.
7. Lose yourself. Instead of being strung along in the process of losing yourself to purchasing the lastest gizmo, learn to transplant that process into an outlet such as writing, music or drawing. Focus on doing interesting things instead of purchasing interesting things.
8. Crunch the numbers. When you're about to make an unecessary purchase, compare it to your passion, say, traveling. Compare the costs of your two, and realize if the purchase is really worth sacrificing living your passion someday soon.

Trailer Food Restaurant Trend- Austin,Texas

Restaurant trends come and go, and often without most of Austin realizing there even was a trend going on. However, airstream trailer restaurants have taken over much of South Austin within the last few years. Savory meals can now be conveniently found curbside no matter what your taste buds prefer. From the Trailer Park Eatery on South First St. to the strip of restaurants on South Congress, they are thriving in the middle of a recession that would threaten the existence of any new restaurant popping up in Austin.

Let’s take a look at a few trailers around Austin that have either recently burst onto the Austin restaurant scene or are already established:

1. Roppolo’s Pizzeria- this joint has been going strong for more than a few years now. With locations on and off of Sixth Street, you are bound to stop here after last call to pick up a big ol’ tasty slice of pizza. Toppings range from regular pepperoni to supreme to plain cheese. Your alcohol-induced taste buds are sure to enjoy a slice whenever you are downtown or making your way home.

2. Torchy's Tacos- Wether you have made it to the permanent location on South First of the trailer located in the Trailer Park Eatery, you have probably heard of Torch's Tacos. With a new special every month and plenty of taco choices, Torchy's keeps everyone satisfied. Just don't expect to find a healthy option when you head to Torchy's. Deep fried chicken and avocado's, jalapeño sausage, plenty of cheese and more than a few meat choices will be sure to take a few years off of your life. But true to their slogan, Torchy's promises "Damn Good Tacos," and that is exactly what you get.

3. Mighty Cone- Located on South Congress in what is clearly a strop mall of trailer eateries. Mighty Cone offers a slightly odd take on food in a cone. You choose between chicken and shrimp, fried almond batter or plain meals wrapped in a tortilla. Or you can go for traditional sliders, but you are sure to receive everything (even fries) in small cones. Try to go on a nice sunny day so you can sit on the red picnic tables and watch the pedestrian traffic on South Congress.

4. Flip Happy Crepes- This places could be called the mother of satisfying trailer foods. Featured on the food network as part of Bobby Flay's Throwdown the trailer, located at 400 Jesse St. on block behind Romeo's on Barton Springs Rd, serves up a variety of handmade crepes that will leave you craving more.
From savory crepes with ingredients such as caramelized onions, chicken, and goat cheese, to classic sweets like Nutella and fruit, the ladies of Flip Happy, Andrea Day Boykin and Nessa Higgins, truly know how to make your taste bud's Flippin' Happy. Though the trailer is closed Monday's and Tuesday's check out their culinary success Wednesday through Sunday or call in your order to beat the line.

5. Lulu B's- A slightly smaller trailer, yet with a lot to offer. Serving up vietnamese sandwiches, spring rolls, salads, smoothies, coffee and bubble teas the trailer off S. Lamar is a popular destination for those grabbing lunch on the go, or with time to spare to sit and enjoy a meal amongst the oak trees. You can go light, with Shrimp and Avocado rolls complimented with a spicy peanut sauce, or really satisfy your hunger with sandwiches such as lemon grass chicken. For under ten dollars you'll be sure to treat yourself to yet another South Austin gem.

This past Friday known to consumers around America as Black Friday marked the start of this holiday's shopping season. As usual, the day seemed as horrible as it sounds, and this shopping season is only expected to be marginally better than last season's (which was the worst in about two decades).

In effect, stores took desperate measures to ensure that their consumer's buying craze didn't fall short. Department stores such as Kohl's and Macy's opened far before the sun rose on Friday morning to cater to the early birds desperate for good deals on electronics and gifts.

The strangest effect? Macy's offered boxes of snack's to shoppers...to ensure that their nutrition and energy was up to par for shopping madness.

Spicewood Getaway: Krause Springs

After a long day of shopping and eating pie and leftovers, my family plans to head 30 miles west of Austin to spend a night or two among in the Texas Hill Country at Krause Springs. Though Krause Springs is more of a popular summer and spring destination for campers because you can cool off in the gorgeous springs, winter seems to suit us just fine.

The camping site is a beautiful 115 acre property located in Spicewood, Texas and has been owned by The Krause family for over 50 years. It's the perfect size for a private get a way, or to come with lots of company since there are 24 rv sites avaiable with electricity. Alright, so, this normally isn't a popular topic of discussion for yours truly since we all get worn down thinking about our place of employment. However, I must admit to you that South Congress Cafe has damn delicious food and that currently, as a promotion, the cafe is offering 20% off the entire menu Sunday evenings through Wednesdays.

Why the big fuss? Well, as of last month the kitchen is under a new chef's supervision, and the fusion-like menu added some really great things. No matter what type of food you prefer, I guarantee you that something on the menu will catch your eye.

BRUNCH

Ever famous (props to the Food Network's Giada) carrot cake french toast is a must try. The densely sweet french toast comes with a pecan cream cheese that is to die for. For all the experienced brunchers, the cafe also offers three different types of eggs benedict to choose from,
crab cake benedict, steak and migas, and traditional. Self explanitory. Delicious. TRY THEM. Looking for something less breakfast and more lunch? The cafe recently added a Quail Sandwich to the menu. Comes with a truffled remolade, carmelized onions, goat cheese, portabella mushrooms, arugula, and bacon. If your mouth isn't watering I suggest you check your pulse ASAP. Other brunch favorites include blackened tuna tacos, crab enchiladas, and a warm goat cheese salad...mm...

Fitness Tips: Taylor Kitsch

As many of us tighten our workouts in preparation for the effect of the holiday season's indulgences we look to others with a fabulous bod for inspiration. Case in point (for men): Canadian born Austin native Taylor Kitsch. Aside form acting Kitsch bas been both a trainer and nutritionist, so the Friday Night Lights actor knows how to stay fit amongst it all.

Kitsch's three tips for fighting for a better body (via Men's Health):

1. Martial Arts. The eastern hemisphere knows best. The twisting and bending will work your core like crazy. To do this in the comfort of your own home and not, say, with a impeccably flexible asian at your front, "Attach a rope handle to the low pulley on a cable stack, bend at the waist and knees, and reach across your body to grab the handle with both hands. Next, forcefully bring it up and across your body as you simultaneously stand up. Do 10 repetitions, reverse your body position, and do 10 more reps."

2. Enhance up your hand-eye coordination. Everyone can benefit from being more alert in this manner. Use a speed bag to develop this. "Strike the bag by windmilling your fists in small, forward circles; keep your hands in front of your face and stare at them, not the bag, to keep them from drifting. Once you've punched the bag, allow it to hit the back part of the platform, rebound, and ricochet off the back part a second time before hitting it again."

3. Mix it up. If anyone does a routine for too long they will get bored, and in effect, the workout will be less effective. Try boxing, alternating cardios, running trails and the places you work out. All in all, a change of scenery in your workouts is healthy for you physically AND mentally.

Enough said boys...time to put down the lonestar and hit the gym.

Deriving from previous experience everytime Robert Rodriquez strolls into South Congress Cafe it's with either of two things: a beautiful latin woman/equally as handsome male or a large, rather organized stack of paperwork.

This time, we know the paperwork will consist of his newest production: a remake of 1987's Predator movie. And, accordingly, hopefully his company will be Brazilian babe Alice Braga or Adrien Brody himself, both of whom star in the movie that will be released in July 2010.

Action horrors, yes, I could care less about, but Adrien Brody spotting in the streets of Austin? Count me in.

Jimmy Choo for H&M

What will women do in the name of fashion? The same thing most males will do in anticipation for the newest edition of Halo. Wait in line for hours to be the first to get their hands (or should I say feet) on the product, despite weathering conditions.

Saturday November 14th marked the release date for the infamous Jimmy Choo for H&M line which included handbags, accessories, first ever edition clothes, and, of course, shoes. Lines of women and their pitied boyfriends formed far before midnight on Friday at H&M stores across the country and abroad (check out the frenzy before a store in Lausanne, Switzerland above). While some opinions of the affordable line by the designer were that 'you get what you pay for' (affordable price= cheaper quality?), others were less cynical and thrilled at the ability, for the first time ever, to have more than one Jimmy Choo label donning their wardrobe.

Photos from the line revealed lots of strappy stilettos, zebra print, suede, boots, leather jackets, neons, and lots of embellishments.

Yes, they're only shoes, but this is America and we love our labels (especially at a fourth of the price) perhaps one day little old Austin,Texas will be able to join the fun... maybe that's asking too much at this point in our growth. Until then, my replacement store, ZARA.

ARF Charity Gala: Hilton Austin Monday Nov. 30th

I spend lots of time on the internet reading quotes. I realize, lots of this should be spent reading books with real substance instead, but sometimes, for instance when I have little time to spare, quotes are just as satisfying to my brain.

My daily wisdom/inspiration comes from a variety of places including Zen Habits and Barbara Ann Kipfer but my third loving guru is none other than Alan Cohen. Cohen's best known as author of Chicken Soup for The Soul, but to others, you could say he's a large player in the so-called "Spiritual" revolution occurring. Cohen does Life Coach Training and speaks at events but what he's really great at is offering daily insights and inspiration.

Cohen's latest book Linden's Last Life is out now and it's subsequent movie will be out in 2011. Get on Cohen's e-mail list for daily quotes and wisdom.

Efron in the ATX?

So, one week from Monday, teeny boppers and adults a like will be at The Paramount to greet Zac Efron and cast as part of the Austin premiere of the film Me and Orson Welles. Likely to be a very lively greeting supported by the Austin Film Society which will donate the event's proceeds to the Texas Filmmaker's Production Fund.

The film, directed by oscar-nominated Richard Linklater, is the story of young director Oroson Welles who puts together Julius Caesar at the newly founded Mercury Theatre in New York, 1937. In the play an adolescent Richard Samuels (played by Efron) is casted with a leading role though he has little acting ability. The coming-of-age, romance film also stars Claire Daines, Ben Chaplin, and Christain McKay. The combination of well-known acting ability should unfold quite interestingly.

While many are intrigued by the film itself, lots of viewers seem to anticipate the drama break out role of Efron's. We'll see how well the High School Musical Hunk proves himself in this more weighty role, but my senses tell me he won't disappoint.

Be there, Monday Nov 30th at the Paramount. Film begins at seven... get there in advance to drown out the screaming young ladies and paparazzi.

As we all tap our feet in anticipation for winter's arrival in Texas, many are already celebrating like the season is present. Think: the world of fashion. Barcelona on Mind

I've been watching steamy, American-perspective movies on the city (insert obvious title here), looking at touristy websites (Gwyneth Paltrow's site GOOP has a very useful guide on the city!), delving into books (critic Robert Hughes wrote a book about the city in the 90's) and looking at all kinds of art.

One of my recent favorite Blogs by the NyTimes, The Moment, introduced me to a new obsession I think you will enjoy, regardless your music taste- The xx. The young (they are all 20!) band of four from London successfully released an album in Europe and has recently become popular in the states as it released it's album here last month. It's difficult to put them into a genre, but their sound is very...intimate, for lack of a better word. Their voices are sweet, whimsical sounding and of course even more appealing because they grew up abroad. The four met at The Elliot School in London, known best for it's visual and performing arts, (the school that produced Hot Chip) and developed shortly after.

Though they've been classified as "dreampop" and "indie rock" among other things across the internet, it's clear that their music reaches a broad variety of genres as they list their influences on myspace as "Aaliyah to Coco Rosie, Rihanna to The Cure, Missy Elliot to Chromatics, The Kills to Ginuwine, Pixies to Mariah Carey, Justin Timberlake to Tracy, and The Plastics" Check, check, check. Right down my alley.

Their newest single, Basic Space, will definitely strike your fancy...and the video, directed by up and coming director/photographer Anthony Dickenson is indeed aesthetically pleasing. The song is very thought and emotion provoking, not to mention, commercial/advertisement/soundtrack worthy?

The xx US tour launched today in New York, so catch them live when they come to Austin a week from tomorrow, the 19th, at, drumroll please... The Mohawk! Tickets are $10 in advance/$12 @ the door. Be there and obsess over their glorious fresh talent with me.

Karen O in the Making?

All you have to do to be famous in the indie/electronica music scene is cut your hair into a short bob, dye it black, and sell your soul to Karen O. Just ask Crystal Castles front woman Alice Glass who's terrifying yet adorable voice led the dance party at FunFunFun Fest on Sunday evening. Though Glass' image is quite duplicate of that of many other indie female singers, the Crystal Castles member has a certain charisma to her that stops me from hating the band entirely. Not to mention, the 21 year old Canadian has a pulled together style, and quite the large stage presence for such a tiny woman.

While the Crystal Castles set at FFF Fest was short, the dancing seemed to last an eternity in the crowd. Their classic single, Crimewave, really set the crowd off into a dancing oblivion. It's difficult to determine what makes CC different from, say, any other electronica/dance band, but at least they can excite their fans in a live performance. Isn't that all that matters anyways? When you've got a crowd full of screaming fans, praising your screaming rather than singing voice, I guess so.

After much fashion blog reading this morning, I'm horrifically disgusted with the amount of hype there is recently in women's fashion over spanx. According to NY Magazine after Oprah named spanx one of her favorite things, the market for the shapewear product tripled to $750 MILLION. That's embarassing. Why women feel that shoving their junk into a smaller space is going to solve any body issues beats me. Sure, whatever get's you into that size two little black dress may be worth your nearly 80 bucks, but the result....an awkward looking, uncomfortable, embarrassment. Besides, will the modern day corset be useful when things get steamy with your man and that little black dress comes off?

The developer of the product Sara Blakely coined the term, "No more grid butt!" for her product, encouraging more and more women to purchase the tummy and thigh minimizing product. I suppose spanx can temporarily solve the body results of an always on the go and little time for body care lifestyle, but it's just another example of America's convenient, it-works-for-now consumerism. The next time I hear a chick in her twenties say she wants to own some spanx, I'm officially moving to Europe after college.

Misprint Maga-zine

This weekend at FunFunFun Fest, amongst the beer cans and site maps floating around on the ground, I managed to run into a copy of Misprint Magazine. Now I may have mentioned my interest in zines previously, but here I pose a specific case for this local magazine that I've come to enjoy and has proved itself in the past year. The magazine is 100% local, and covers a handful of Austin culture ranging from live music and fashion to art and reviews with an "irreverant cynical slant" which they deemed themselves according to their wesbite info.

This issue titled, "END LIVE MUSIC" contained, "The Misprint Guide to College Football" an article titled "Pumping Irony" which brusquely pointed out the pros of ditching the "late night booze and queso filled lifestyle" all young texans live for one that includes the gym. And also, "The Stupid, Futile Rallying Cries of Texas" where the reality behind a few cliche slogans (Keep Austin Weird, Yuppies off the EastSide, Kuato Lives, Dollar Long Islands!) was explored. Among other articles, the issue also reviewed the "shitty and the glorious" bands at FunFunFun Fest.

Overall, though the zine caters to one specific Austin persona of people, it does so successfully. With the cynical, blunt, love-to-hate voice that's used throughout the articles, one can get the true essence of Austin's young adults, hipsters, and haters. Not to mention, tips on where the "scene's at", what's trendy, and vice-like standards for hipness.

Buddy's Place

Inspired by Sarah Stolfa's book, The Regulars, and as part of the Austin American Statesman's December Bar guide my entertainment journalism class is collectively putting together a piece about bar regulars in Austin.

Upon first walking into Buddy's Place I was greeted warmly from the Bartender, an old friend of mine, and when she pointed out the man I'd be interviewing, I knew I was in for dozens of stories and old school insights. Gene Higgins sat in his bar stool thrown with a pomegranate in front of him and a half-empty Pearl. After introducing myself Gene responded confidently, "Hi, I'm Gene and I'm from Earth".

After learning about Earth, Texas and the farm Gene grew up on during our Interview last week at Buddy's Place, he reminded me to "be sincere about everything you do" and not to waste time wondering how life would turn out had you taken an alternate path. Genuine words from a man who spent his life completely opposite as planned, yet would do it all over again if he could. Saudi Arabia, Australia and Earth, Texas are among the places that Mr.Higgins spent most of his life.

While Gene hasn't resided in Austin his entire life, for over twenty years he has, and has spent his time as Associate City Manager, a lighting supply business owner and a regular at Buddy's Place. When Gene is not running his lighting business he spends his time at Buddy's Place, where the Texans are plentiful, as are the juke box tunes, games of pool, shuffle board, and darts. While the bar may not be the proper socializing grounds for yours truly, something about it makes the Texan in me feel at home.

Buddy's Place is located 8619 Burnet Rd. in North Central Austin, with happy hour daily, from 2-7. Go, grab a Pearl, play some shuffle board and say hello to Gene for me.

Get In Touch With Your Roots

This weekend, I was fortunate enough to spend a good two hours hiking at Wild Basin Preserve off of Loop 360. The weather was beautiful, and the hike was meditative and a nice stress-management exercise.

My only advice, arrive far ahead of the sun's departure (moonlight isn't exactly hiking-trail appropriate), grab a trail map and don't hike with an over-confident hiker...getting lost IS possible. The trails on the preserve are over 3 miles long and you're bound to see deer, waterfalls, and walk stream-side for at least a mile. If you don't already love nature, go on a hike, your computer trained eyes and always-on-the-go self will appreciate you.

Admission to the preserve $3 for adults and $2 for seniors and children under 12. Technically, the trail hours are from sunrise to sunset so arrive with enough time to do some exploring.

OSHO: Insights for a New Way of Living

Throughout this flourishing self-help, or should I say, Pursuitofhappiness revolution, many are offering their wisdom out for a minimal price to readers and consumers. The catch, not everyone selling their wisdom is exactly up to par with guru-status.

Sure, many writers have life experience to teach from and the ability to motivate consumers seeking happiness and ways to be a more well-rounded successful human as a whole, yet many lack pure, genuine insight.

OSHO, other wise known as Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, can guide anyone and everyone with a happiness dilemma in the west (look at his beard..how could you not trust the man). In the 1960's he was a philosophy professor and spiritual teacher that traveled India as a slightly controversial public speaker. In the 1970's and 80's Osho gained most of his popularity in the West shortly after he created an Ashram that attracted many from the west part of the Human Potential Movement. The Ashram, otherwise known as the International Meditation Resort in Prune, India is still open to those seeking Osho's spiritual teachings.

Although Osho died in 1990, his lessons, which emphasize the importance of meditation, awareness, love, celebration, creativity and humor are still gaining popularity all around the world today. For an easily accessible door into his teachings, check out the website dedicated to his knowledge.

My favorite part about Osho's work, which inspired this blog-entry, his books. I'm currently reading Freedom: The Courage to Be Yourself. The book is part of a series of books on "Insights for a new way of living" which also includes other topics such as, Courage, Creativity, Maturity, Intuition, Joy, Intelligence, Awareness, and Intimacy. They are all simple, and Osho's insights are easy for your western-conditioned brain to wrap it's head around. They're the kind of books that leave you quoting exerpts to others and highlighting important phrases. I've read a handful of all-in-one spiritual, psychological, philosophical like books, and Osho's seems to have many other authors beat when it comes to intuition.

His books are still being sold and very accessible. I encourage you to check them out for a worth-while and satisfying read...you know you've been waiting for the excuse for that trip to Book People...

Austin Bleet-Up

So, if you're fresh to the Austin Blog scene and would like to poke your face into the growing community of writers AND readers, this Austin "Bleet-up" event is worth attending. This July the Austin community of bloggers held an event at TRIO for local bloggers to meet, discuss, and share ideas over Hors d'oeuvres and wine and apparently it was sucessful, and had a large turn out so they're planning something new. This time, the "bleet-up" will be even more snazzy, with bands, fashion, photos and drinks at the Mohawk. Check it out...perhaps we'll meet.

Minor FUN!

So, being the glorious age of 20 I am, there seems to be increasingly amounts of things to do in Austin that do NOT involve drinking in public. That is, I guess I've just greatly come to appreciate them this past, slow-motion year.

1. Become a Foodie.

Simple and satisfying. Trying a new restaurant a few times a month will not only increase your knowledge of good food and palette, but it will make you seem cooler when you know exactly where to take each and every out-of-towner for a good dining experience. Not into dining out? I've recently taken a cooking course at Whole Foods. Informative, learned lots... impress your guests with innovative and savory dishes.

2.EXERCISE EXERCISE EXERCISE

The weather is perfect for it right now. The trail around Lady Bird Lake is even going under renovations to become even MORE BEAUTIFUL than it already is, motivating your lazy butt to get off the computer and go for a jog. Rent a kayak, ride a bike, go for a hike at Wild Basin Preserve even. For all of those that prefer indoor workouts, yoga is my personal favorite, all around town, affordable. Also, for all the cardio and weightlifting desires, memberships to the YMCA seem the most affordable and useful to students.

3. See Live Music

I don't know how to elaborate...lots of music venues around town aren't 21 and up, and feeding off crowd vibes are always fun. Stubbs on Red River consistently offers worthy shows for underagers, as well as Antones on west 5th st. If you're into discovering music, obviously, Waterloo Records on Lamar Blvd. is your spot to discover new artists that meet your specific tastes...

4. Become a Film/Theatre Geek

The Alamo Drafthouse will always have a movie or event to suit your tastes...ranging from sing-a-longs to that cheesy 80's horror flick you love. All three awesomely located drafthouse locations are 18&up. For more sophisticated tastes, say plays, the Zachary Scott Theatre on Riverside Dr. always features local acting talent, as well as a diversity of visiting plays.

5. Grace the Nightlife

Okay, maybe I'm teasing a little(lot), but there ARE 18&up clubs in Austin. Spiros, Paradox, Midnight Rodeo, Momo's, and The Back Room among others will allow your baby face in the front door for dancing and soda-sipping. Explore at your own risk! (Warning: Young Austinites may be bratty, pretentious and showy.)

If you're sitting somewhere in public, perhaps a coffee shop, reading this post while you sip a glass of Merlot or Lonestar to quench your thirst, then please disregard this as I congratulate you in all your legal glory.

Plans for halloween, Austin? It's less than two weeks away slackers, and I suggest if you haven't gotten your costume yet, to do it ASAP. Obviously there's only one shop in town that beats out the rest when it comes to halloween attire. Lucy in Disguise on S.Congress Ave. has your assortment of wigs, hats, masks, headdresses, shoes, gloves and need I say COSTUMES. Whatever your festive desire, the store has it, or at least the accessories to top off your home-made costume. Most costumes are available for rent, making it convenient for you to dress as you please for each and every costume party you plan on attending. Check out the store soon, as it's a bit claustrophobic feeling inside, to get the exact costume you want. My picks this year: Michael Jackson, Carmen Miranda or a Flapper Girl. Hm.

Got the costume but don't know what to do? The Austin Enchanted Forest it's holding it's 10th annual costume show and ball Friday the 30th and Saturday Halloween Eve. The Forest won't be holding a Haunted Trail as it has previous years but the scene at the costume ball and dance party is always promising surely entertaining. Admission is still TBA but typically ranges under $10.

If you prefer something horrific and real-life scary, check out The House of Torment, rated in the Travel Channel's top haunted houses in America. The House of Torment is open 7 until midnight the next two weeks, as well as the first two weeks of November to fill all of your horror desires for $15.

Still not your scene? There's always an assortment of festivities downtown Halloween weekend. The Driskill (need I remind you, Austin's most haunted hotel!) will be holding its 2009 Ghoulwill Ball on Friday October 30th which donates all of it's proceeds to Goodwill and its job-related services. The Ball is catered, will be serving cocktails all evening, and includes auctions and costume contests. Tickets range around $125 or however much you wish to donate for the cause.

Review: Paranormal Activity

Adrenaline highs are an incredible feeling. Let's face it, that's part of the reason why human beings like myself love scary movies, for the suspense they create in your body. This is true despite they fact that they may keep you from your precious sleep and run your electricity bills high from keeping all the lights on many nights in a row (at least this is my personal case). Paranormal Activity, a low budget film currently showing in a limited amount of theaters, does just that, keeps you from feeling safe closing your eyes at night.

The plot is simple, and follows a young couple whom buys a house together and is troubled by a possible demonic presence. Unlike most films involving possible demonic possession by a human, the entire film is based around a home camera the couple installs in their bedroom in hopes of catching footage of the demon that's haunting one of the main characters, Katie, in her sleep.

Overall, the effects were played off successfully considering the amount of money spent on making the film as a whole (less than $11,000). The entire film was suspenseful, however slow until the last thirty minutes the the demon's vengeance is taken out in full. The movie gets it's points in character development, and it's ability to let you feel connected to the characters...Katie in specific, until she spirals down into demonic quality and murders her love companion, Micha, right in front of the camera's lens.

In the end, the movie makes you question your capability to be possessed by a deamon...and just what happens to your body when you sleep....a true horror staple in my opinion.

Northfaces, beanies, leggings and boots. According to the fashion-runway-streets of the city it's officially fall in Austin, Texas. Not only is this a nice break from the flip-flops and tank tops and sweat-stained shirts, it's almost as if there's a newfound appreciation for the city at the start of a fresh season. (I retract this paragraph as I sit, two days later, editing this post and wearing all three of those above mentioned summer items. Texas in October at it's finest).

While most of us familiar with the city have these fall items ingrained in our wardrobe, others may be lacking. Here's where to go to revamp your functional fall wardrobe, with a twist from this season:

Whole Earth

Pricey but quality and timeless. This store carries outdoorsy-clothing shoes and gear with brands like Northface, Patagonia and Beringer. Plus, they've got an assortment of warm and orthopedic shoes, cozy yoga pants and organic cotton long-sleeve tees. Not so fashion forward, but perhaps more for the functional, comfortable dresser (Yes, you in the birkenstock's and socks, this store's for you).

Searching for motorcycle jackets, lace-up boots, leggings and other sorts of trends? Check out The Domain up North off of Mopac and Century Oaks Terrace. You'll get the quality items you want, with that extra in-style flare. Ladies, I recommend checking out Free People for all sorts of fun dresses, leggings and fall attire. Also, another favorite is the newly opened Zara, for ladies AND men, carrying trendy coats, scarves and shoes at actual affordable prices.

Tarka Indian Kitchen

Did that last date at the Clay Pit leave you feeling uncomfortably American and like one huge, un-cultured taste bud? Maybe you just pretended to know what kind of curry you liked, or perhaps you were overwhelmed by the spice and didn't want to reveal this to your dining partner. Either way, you're not alone. Clay Pit is expensive for the frugal student, and not accessible for a quality Indian meal on the go in a busy lifestyle.

I've found the perfect solution to the above problems this past week, however. A new restaurant in Sunset Valley, Tarka Indian Kitchen is a sister restaurant to the Clay Pit and offers quick and quality Indian food for take-out, or a more casual Indian dinner dining experience. Whatever type of Indian dish you're looking for, Tarka serves fresh and authentic food, and satisfies everyone from the Curry connoisseur to someone looking to grab some quick biryani with vegetables.

The restaurant opened nearly a month ago and has already acquired popularity from the neighborhood. During my dining experience, 30 bucks payed for a meal that satisfied three. We ordered Wine, Chicken Pakoras and garlic naan bread to start off with and then Biryani with shrimp, vegetable kabobs and coconut curry to feast on. While the food came out pretty quickly it tasted just as quality as a cooked meal from the Clay Pit, with the perfect amount of spice and combination of flavor. The menu is simple and easy to understand for those not as familiar with Indian food, and, drumroll please...is a lot cheaper than The Clay Pit with smaller portions and entrees for less than ten bucks.

My favorite part about the place was the dining atmosphere. Although it's mainly resturaunt meant to be faster, for a meal on the go, the inside is lovely for a casual dining experience, or for enjoying wine on the patio while waiting for your dinner. I'll definitely be back.

Art Outside 2009

I mentioned Art Outside in a previous post of mine about the Enchanted Forest. While the Enchanted Forest will not be hosting Austin's 5th annual Art Outside this year, it's still going on and will be bigger and better than ever this season. This year the three-day event beginning Friday the 9th will be held on Apache Pass Northeast of Austin.

If you aren't familiar with Art Outside, it's one of the biggest art shows in Austin every year, hosting some of the cities finest local artists of all kinds. The festival is $29 per day or $50 for all three days which includes unlimited access to the festivals array of performers, musicians, fashion, comedy and yoga workshops offered all day long. For a full schedule of events and info check out the Art Outside 2009 website.

What I'd be most excited about seeing (if I didn't have a conflicting work schedule!)... DJ Freq Nasty. Yes he's freaky and yes he's nasty, but he'll get your body moving. After all, he dee-jays for the one and only Santigold herself. He's dee-jaying on Saturday from 1am-2:30 am...always subject to change. Check him out, or, one of the other hundred plus bands and dj-s performing this weekend!

Review: Whip It

Leaving the theater post seeing Whip It, I had this giddy, inspired feeling. Not because the film had an incredibly deep and meaningful message, but mainly because it was full of lively character, humor, and youth culture which is highly relatable being an Austinite.

The film starred Ellen Page as Bliss Cavender, a distraught teen discovering her passion to become a roller derby chick, in high contrast to her mother's hopes of her being a beauty pageant queen. Page plays the nerdy but cool teen's part well, surprise surprise, as do her other spunky, tattooed, free-spirited, derby team mates. The film includes a love interest of Bliss Cavender's played by Landon Pigg, a wise derby coach played by the charming Andrew Wilson, an arch-nemesis by Juliette Lewis, a perverse and comical derby announcer played by Jimmy Fallon and teammates including hip-hop diva Eve, and a spunky Drew Barymore who directed the flick also.

The film was Barymore's director debut, and although some may hold her to high, difficult standards, to my knowledge of how to direct film-making she did an average job. While most of the film was shot in Michigan, Barymore's interest in Austin was apparent in the plot (The Derby is held in Austin, while Bliss and her family are from Bodine, Texas), various artsy shots of Congress, Guadalupe and South Lamar, and countless allusions made to the city i.e. South Congress vintage shopping, stoners, and all around out-there, quirky personalities. Aside from the characterization, the skating--both minimally violet and sexual, was entertaining to watch.

In the end, the film made me want to pick up a pair of skates, throw on some fishnets, dye my hair purple and learn how to take a hit or two just for the day. Not bad Barymore...

SEAHOLM: A Fresh Event Space

Never have I felt so lucky to be young and living in Austin, Texas amist it's growth and flourish than I felt Friday night. Broken Social Scene played a free show at the Sea Holm Power Plant Friday night, debuting the new event space to the public . It felt strange and serene, but in a really great way.

When hearing that the power plant was going to host two evening shows the weekend of ACL, one might not know what to expect from a building that has been vacant for so long, but the lighting, sound, and fresh vibes all worked perfectly together to make the show an overall worthy experience. Supposedly a grand total of 4000 people came out to bring the venue officially to life.

Having lived in Austin for two decades (I know, I'm old) , it's sometimes difficult to get excited about live music events and bands that have been to Austin countless times. However, Friday night's show made me feel completely different. Not only is the Sea Holm Power plant such a historic landmark to Austin, it is now about to be a landmark of the future too...at least that's what's being discussed. It's strange that a place over half a century old can be both old and new. Plans to turn the old power-plant into a new social space are now underway. The project will include condominiums, shops, and a large event space. Interesting. Perhaps it wil help in the local economy? We'll see. Check out the project site for more info.

Back to the show...you know the feeling you get when you're somewhere new, a feeling that anticipates many good nights to come in that same space? Well, that's exactly what I, and I'm sure the thousands of other people felt while at the power plant Friday evening. Who would have thought of creating an event space out of a power plant anyway? Austin, Texas, of course. Looking forward to the coming changes out of Seaholm...

AUSTIN MAKES A BOOK

How do you feel about zine culture? I've always been entertained by magazines and quickly, as tiny zines began their trend, I was interested too. Incase you're confused, zines are small, magazine like publications, usually pictures and text aimed at a very specific crowd or subculture like graffiti, poetry, or political manifestos.

That being said, this new project I've stumbled upon via my daily internet networkings interested me because of it's similarity with zines and graphic type books with collections of arty photos and witty text. The project called, Austin Makes a Book will be similar to a book previously published by the city of New York called New York Makes a Book. I know, I know, following in NYC's footsteps... how cliche Austin...but ours, obviously, will undermine theirs.

Pride aside, the book is going to be a really fun project. The premise is simple: This book is crowd-published. This means that 100 people will pay 30 bucks for their own page and publish whatever they want that'll fit onto a 7x7 page. Photos. Stories. Art. Notes. Whatever...

It's the perfect way to publish that naked Polaroid of your ex to the rest of the world (okay, maybe pushing it) or that art masterpiece of yours that your parents never hung on the fridge. As long as you live in Austin and your submission isn't obscene or offensive it's game. Check their website for more info on submission guidelines.

Even better...the publicists (phenix & phenix literary publicists) will be throwing a launch party for all 100 authors when the book comes out in November!

Fashionistas of The Internet

Online Fashion Journalism. What's your opinon? Is it useless? I myself, spent countless years when I was younger hoping to be write for a magazine one day or have a career as a fashion editor. Not too uncommon. Anyways, blogging has made it possible for each and every fashionista out there to feel like a fashion journalist.

When the time came this summer for little old Austin, Texas to debut it's first ever Austin Fashion Week lots of local businesses jumped on the fashion blogging bandwagon to help create hipe for their businesses. Now you might pass this off as more useless information, taking up space on the world wide web, but I think this is the start of something great.

For example, at the start of fashion week Feathers Boutique on Congress Avenue created a blog for it's shoppers. Rather dry, however. The only good aspect of their blog is photos of their new inventory and news about their events. Still good for the over-achieving shopper. What are the criteria for a fashion blog anyhow?

Another vintage fashion blog, The Year of Living Thriftily, is full of pictures by the writer but also links to her associated ebay store where you can buy the items seen in her blog.

More developed, magazines such as NEET have created blogs which are similar to their magazines, yet they provide fashionistas with links and showcase different shops, websites and designers weekly. Sort of like tid bits of their magazine, quickly published.

Other than establishments, there are plenty of young ladies blogging about fashion which, Thats Chic is a prime example of. Lots of pictures for inspiration, make-up reviews and tricks,

where to get good deals online shopping, and collaging.

So, what's the use in all of this? I'm not quite sure. Most of it is just to share ideas I suppose. I do know that I've discovered some pretty great aspiring designers who sell their items online through fashion blogs. Check out http://www.snoozerloser.bigcartel.com/ if you're curious.

Being a student, I guess I should throw my two cents in about local coffee shops. In order to choose favorites, I must first remind you what kind of environment is necessary to a student...one that is calmly inhabited, quiet, and perfect for studying.

This eliminates from the list plenty of coffee spots all Austinites love, for various reasons. Take Flipnotics, for instance. The coffee shop offers a beautiful location among Barton Hills. Perfect for sipping a latte outside or having a glass of wine. Their outdoors area and deck is awesome, and although their breakfast tacos, empanadas, salads and other food aren't up to par, the menu is quickly evolving and getting better. I will always love Flipnotics, however, it's not a study haven. Live music nightly and dim lighting makes this coffee spot tough to study at.

Alas, meeting the requirements, my favorite coffee spot in Austin to study at is Bouldin Creek Coffe House. Not only is Bouldin Creek always calm, quiet, and full of intellects, you can never go wrong ordering from their vegetarian menu. Veggie tacos, hummus, veggie burgers, veggie sandwiches, gazpacho, omelets, breakfast served all day- you name it. Yet, my favorite part about Bouldin Creek is their daily specials. Man do those baristas know how to whip out something innovative and tasty out of a kitchen of ingredients. I remember going to Bouldin Creek on a hot day this summer and ordering the special which was a spicy watermelon gazpacho, and grilled cheese made with sourdough bread, goat cheese and basil. It was to die for. Their food is always, always fresh. More importantly, to a true Texas lady like myself, there are lots of spicy items to choose from on the menu (Texas chipotle brownies! Mmm). Would you like some cayenne pepper in this?

Aside from their foods, Bouldin also has interesting and tasty drinks, try Rose Lemonade for instance. You can add different extracts like rose to any drink, and let me tell you, it's always surprisingly good. Other than quality vegetarian food, drinks, a full coffee and tea bar, Bouldin Creek also serves beer and wine to the thirsty.

Come in their morning when the specials are at their prime and the coffee just started brewing. Bouldin Creek is located at 1501 S. First Street (Right by Jovitas) from 7-Midnight during the week and 9-Midnight on the weekends.

A Writer's Therapy

Finding new and fresh inspiration is essential to staying motivated and being successful. As an aspiring writer I feel blessed to be around talented writers at my University that inspire me on a daily basis. Tonight I was lucky enough to listen to poet and adjunct professor here at St. Edwards, Carrie Fountain, read some of her poetry on campus.

As part of a "Visiting Writers Series" Fountain read poetry from her first collection titled "Burn Lake", as well as other works. Burn Lake consisted of 5 poems which were insightful, wise, and apparently worthy of a National Poetry Series Award (a true accomplishment for a poets first series of poetry). Fountain mentioned that most of the material in her work was anecdotal and taken directly from her life experiences, yet much of it also came from the things she meant to say to family and friends while growing up, but never did. Another point she made about poetry... compared to other writing, was that it doesn't necessary have to be truthful but instead just aimed at truth. I liked this a lot. Mainly because, as a student writer, it is sometimes forgotten that there is writing that exists outside the analytical realm.

In the past, I've taken a Creative Writing course however not ever taken the time to read poetry until recently (thanks, Carrie). Fountain mentioned that one of her favorite poets was Emily Dickinson, so being inspired I looked into some of her famous published work:

Through the great Waters sleep,

Though they are still the Deep,

We cannot doubt-

No vacillating God

Ignited this Abode

To put it out

From what I discovered, Dickinson's work was morbid, some of it hopeful, and a lot of reflected her preoccupation with the study of Jesus Christ, as in this piece of work. A lot of other aspects in her writing that got me thinking... spontaneous use of dashes, capitalization and constantly changing formatting. It was nice to read someone else's creative thoughts.

Extra credit aside, I was thankful I took the time to see Fountain read because she led me to a fresh perspective on writing, and led me to read something creative this weekend, reminding me just how therapeutic writing can be.

LOCO NUNCA

Fact: In the world today more and more young adults are joining the blog world. The Pew Internet and American Life Project estimated that, in 2006, there were nearly 12 million adults writing and publishing work on web blogs. (Source)

No telling how many are blogging today.

Opinion: This is a good thing.

That said, I'd like to advertise for some friends of mine who's work I find enjoyable. This group of young adults, most of them Austinites, write for a blog they call Loco Nunca and write from the perspective of "Generation Y". Their work is hilarious, a little obscene but worth reading if you like to identify with youth culture in a humorous way.

Their topics range from music and art to sex, politics, partying and fashion. Some of their entries are rants, others reviews, but what's great about their site is that they have a variety of writers who all offer a different opinion on the topics of today's youth culture.

Alongside the writing, Loco Nunca also throws sponsored parties and makes videos, just to better capture the essence of youth culture in Austin.

Check out some of their work, or join them tonight at the Alamo Drafthouse Ritz as they submit one of their short films in the first annual Alamo Public Access.

My ACL Rebound

ACL isn't happening for me this year. Choosing not to go this year will break my six year streak of attending the festival, but I don't mind too much. I've seen Kings of Leon a few times and I'm sure Karen O. is amazing live, but not worth scrounging the 60 bucks for her and the other small bands playing on Friday. Oh, but the big kicker for me was that there will be no Lily Allen at the festival as originally planned.

What I'm really stoked for this year is FunFunFun Fest. It's at Waterloo Park and the idea of a music festival in November is appealing to me on many levels. No sweaty dancing bodies or or sun burns to worry about. Plus, it's a lot more affordable than ACL. If you're a student and you buy tickets in September they're only $67 for the weekend (regular priced weekend wristbands are $75/ $45 for a day). This turns out to be a pretty good deal with 90+ bands playing.

I'll tell you who I'm most excited to see...

Mikey Rocks and Chuck English of The Cool Kids playing on Saturday evening.

What's really awesome about the festival is that each of the four stages are organized by the genre of the artists that will be performing on them: indie, punk, singer/songwriter, and dance/hip-hop. The festival is November 7th and 8th. See you there.

Blood, Boobs, and Gore.

Make fun of me all you want for seeing Sorority Row, but the film industry is who you should really make fun of. A friend of mine invited me to see the flick via, "Don't you want to go watch a bunch of sorority girls die? C'mon it'll be awesome." Sure. Regardless of it's lack of quality acting, the movie was surprisingly scary and had a "thrilling" plot. It was very I Know What You Did Last Summer, and was about of a group of young adults, Sorority members of 'Theta-Pi' and their frat-boy counterparts, who commited an eery murder in a prank gone wrong, and tried to live with the consequences of attempting to keep it a secret. Slowly, all the ladies of Theta-Pi die in different yet equally as gory manners by the killer who wore a hooded graduation gown when committing the murders. The movie ends with the protagonists one last hurrah in discovering the killer was her own boyfriend, the charming and consoling, least expected one of course.

The actors were stylish and attractive. And yep, you guessed it, shirts came off while the blood was shed the ladies of Theta-pi died with pretty faces and stilettos on their feet.

What fall would be complete without college girls facing death in their underwear anyways?

Kehinde Wiley

I adore this artist. I saw a piece of Kehinde Wiley's at the Blanton Museum of Art for the first time about a year and a half ago and it immediately caught my eye because of it's vibrancy. Curious, I went home to look up his other work. Now I'm not much of an art conosseiur, I love to look at it and soak it in, preferably simple art that's flashy, fun, and Andy Warhol-esque. However, I couldn't tell you much about the artist's technique or try categorizing it with much sophistication.

That being said, I'll do my best on this one... Kehinde Wiley is an artist out of Brooklyn who is famous for his photo-realist paintings of young African American men and various famous hip-hop artists (check out Biggie, below!). The young men in his paintings are typically decked out in hip-hop gear, yet posed as ancient historic figures ranging from renaissance era saints to spanish conquistadors. All of the figures, are presented in a high esteemed manner, with their heads held high. In perfect complement to these figures, Wiley's backgrounds are often modern patterns, intricate florals or bright textiles. I think the two together come off quite aesthetically pleasing, and almost contradictory in symbolism. This is the piece at the Blanton, portraying the slight contrast between masculinity and femininity that is present in most of his paintings:

Although he receives varying critiques, Kehinde's career has been full of success the past few years. In 2008 alone he was featured in The New Yorker multiple times and was also featured in the New York Times, Paper Magazine and Art in America. His work has been featured in his own solo galleries across the US, in China, and he recently traveled to Rio De Janeiro to do portrait work with the locals there. Regardless of the message he's trying to portray, Kehinde Wiley attracts a wide variety of people to his work because its just so---diverse? She & Him

As if Zooey Deschanel weren't charming enough through her beauty and acting...she'll make you fall even harder with her vocals (yep, that christmas song serenade scene in Elf was real). Her indie folk band, She & Him, which released it's debut album in March of 2008 does just that. It's folky, up beat and catchy- with a hint of a 60's surfer sound. You'll definitely have this song on repeat because her voice is addicting:

She & Him's debut album was successful enough to create anticipation for their second, Volume Two, especially after her and M.Ward, along with back up singers, bassist and drummer toured the U.S. last year, making a stop at the SXSW music festival here in Austin.

Currently, Deschanel and her partner in crime M.Ward are planning the Volume Two album to be released in 2010. What took me so long to listen to this album? Never doubt the vocal skills of an already talented young lady.

Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend

True story. What is it about the shiny, compact little rocks that make a woman feel so good? I contemplated this as a strolled from Anthropologie yesterday, with a smile on my face and a diamond necklace in my bag. Not quite sure, but wearing diamonds is a feeling similar to that a woman get's when she yields in benefits from RETAIL THERAPY.

My top picks for retail therapy...just in time for fall:

This is retail therapy at it's finest, yes you're going to spend a pretty penny on attire here but their pieces are timeless and always in style. Not only does Anthropologie sell great casual dresses and clothing for women they have an array of room decor, bath products and motivating books like, What Would Audrey Do?

Emeralds

Right across the street on N. Lamar is a young lady's heaven. The store makes you feel like you're in a giant closet with jewelry, bags, and dresses but most importantly SHOES. Emeralds has a fabulous selection of shoes with prices ranging from 30-60...not bad for a pair of killer pumps you'll want to wear everyday.

Feathers

If you're more into one of a kind pieces, obviously vintage is your forte. Feathers is top notch for finding vintage designer shoes, bags, dresses and jewelry in excellent condition. Their stock is always changing and although their items can be a little pricey, nothing can beat the fabulous feeling you'll get when wearing a silk designer dress and suede boots!

Goodie Two Shoes

A little less pricey, and a lot more Funky right down the road from Feathers is Goodie Two Shoes on Congress Avenue. Goodie Two Shoes is a small boutique that sells amazing dresses, shoes and funky jewelry with prices ranging from 15-30 bucks. Perfect for finding the cute wedges or bangles your wardrobe needs.

Need the therapy this instant but don't have the money to spend? Savers on S.Lamar is my favorite place to thrift shop and find fun pieces to wear. I recently bought a Ninewest bag from Savers for FIVE BUCKS. It's perfect for that new 1990's dress you've been wanting to sport for fun.

Yogini's and Friends

Do you take yoga? Yoga is my therapy. It's good for the mind and the body... but you already know that. Classes at YogaYoga are my favorite, with highly talented instructors who ought to be called mentors or guru's. But with all the meditating, sweating, and knowledge you can get in one class at any of YogaYoga's six studios, things can and do get a little pricey.

For penny-pinchers like myself, Ruta Maya coffee house off of South Congress is the perfect alternative for those still wanting a good class and mantra to ponder on without forking over lots of cash to the cause. I usually go to the noon class on Saturday's at Ruta Maya which is absolutely free and is taught by Pamela Brewer, an amazing instructor. Not only does Ruta Maya offer classes six out of seven days of the week but it offers a lovely space to take classes in. Yoga students are encouraged to buy something from the cafe, whether it be a cup of coffee, tea, or a breakfast taco to help support the coffee house and continue free yoga classes for the public.

If you aren't squeezed for money, there are plenty of fabulous other yoga studios around town:

Yogagroove

Up north, off Great Northern Blvd. The studio offers great Bikram yoga classes seven days a week, multiple times a day with pretty good rates. If you're new to Bikram and have never been there before you can take unlimited classes for $28 the first month AND if you're a student they offer unlimited classes at $100/per month. They just redid their space and sell yoga clothing, health food and fresh smoothies.

Austin Kula Yoga

If yoga in a heated room full of sweaty bodies isn't your thing, Austin Kula Yoga is a charming little studio in West Austin that offers a variety of yoga classes. With workshops offereed almost monthly catered to beginners, athletes and dancers anyone can find a suitable workout. Fight the Fever

Everyone around me is sick right now. The flu, head colds, you name it. On more than one occasion I've seen people wearing protective masks in public places like the grocery store. Swine flu looks have even hit the runways?

What happened to working immune systems? I understand the convenience of meds but I'm not a firm believer or user of them (and clearly they aren't working for some). I suppose immunizations do the trick too, but when that's not available why not try some natural immunity.

Incorporate these foods into your diet for better luck this flu season:

Yogurt- filled with live cultures that are full of bacteria which fight off bad bacteria and increase your body's white blood cell count.

Oranges- Vitamin C. Enough said.

Garlic- packed with compounds high in sulfur like ajoene and allicin, which help ward off diseases and battle infections.

Carrots- have lots of beta carotene, a phytonutrient that increases your body's production of T cells.

Spinach- contains LOTS of antioxidants.

Oysters- help your body in producing cytokines, a protein which is known to ward off illnesses.

Salmon- has lots of omega-3 fatty acids, which help your body's phagocytes fight bacteria more effectively.

Bell Pepper- Also packed with lots of vitamin C and prompts your body to produce more antibodies which cover the surface of cells to help protect from viruses.

Barley- contains a high amount of beta glucans, a very strong antioxidant.

Dear Austin, How I love thee

I want to be passionate about something. Living in the same place that I've grown up and been in for two decades sort of sucks the passion and excitement out of most things. The city isn't dull, and I feel like I've gotten to know some really great people here and established a thick network of friends BUT I want to move and experience a new city, new country, and new lifestyle. However, I'm forcing myself to be patient while this undergraduate degree ensues... In the mean time I can focus on what I love about Austin to get me by. Here are the reasons that when I leave Austin after my undergrad work at Saint Edwards I know I'll always be back at some point.

1. Austin has numerous, fabulous healthy places to fuel the body. Daily Juice, Sun Harvest, Whole Foods--what will I do without these places one day?

2.Everyone in this city is laid back. You can roll out of bed wearing your pajamas to the coffee shop and no one will give a damn or look twice your way.

3.This city is beautiful. The day when I can't run on the hike and bike trail at Lady Bird Lake or swim at the springs for my morning work-out will be a sad one.

4. DIVERSITY. Okay, I went to Austin High and I'm the type of person that likes swimming with every fish in the sea by my side. East side, north side, south side and west side, every part of the city has something unique and charming to offer.

Save the Forest

An oasis? Maybe. You might have heard of Austin's Enchanted Forest from their horrifically scary haunted trail during the fall time or for their fashion shows and art events like Art Outside during the springtime. In 2008 the Forest even won 'Best Place to see Local Art' by the Chronicle readers poll. Either way, the 3.5 acres on West Oltorf and Lamar has something to suit your creative fancy whether you're a local aspiring artist or not.

Unfortunately, city hall forced the Enchanted Forest to close it's doors to the public last summer, disabling it's ability to hold this year's Art Outside in March after a tough fight. Various reasons led up to this incident, including laws involving the amount of people you're allowed to accommodate per plot of land, and fire marshal warnings about lighting in trees, etc. The Enchanted Forest is trying to reopen it's doors this October, for a rescheduled Art Outside event as it's doing it's finishing touches on getting up to par with city codes. Hip-hop is a Guilty Pleasure

Mainstream hip-hop to underground stuff, late eighties to to modern day...I like it all. Recently it seems I have plenty of friends with a taste for music that's 'too sophisticated' for hip-hop which I don't appreciate one bit. Sure, lot's of hip-hop lyrics are demoralizing and offensive but regardless hip-hop just makes you feel good (no need to get offended or take Luda's lyrics so seriously, ladies). Not to mention, there are plenty of artists out there who attempt at being political in their music, or make their music for a cause.

That being said, my most recent favorite artist is Talib Kweli, who's music sounds a lot like De La Soul or A Tribe Called Quest. Their music was most popular in the late eighties and nineties but I've most recently gotten addicted to it after hearing Talib. On a run, on the way to school, or just hanging around the house these artists keep my spirits up...

Yes, It's silly, but I love it (keep in mind, this is from 1990)
